In 1872, US President Ulysses S. Grant signed an act creating the world’s first national park – Yellowstone NP. The beginnings of the movement to protect nature were not easy as new settlers were mostly interested in robbing the land and exploiting its resources. However, the idea of protecting outstanding scenic natural areas for their own sake and for the enjoyment of everyone became part of American national policy in the 1890s. Today the National Park System encompasses 63 designated national parks in the US and the park ranger in his Smokey Bear hat is often considered an American icon.

During the presentation we will learn more about the incredible places that are now protected as national parks. Some of them are famous worldwide (such as the Yellowstone NP with its colorful hot springs and geysers shooting hot water into the air), while others (e.g., Bryce Canyon with its largest collection of hoodoos, or Arches NP where natural sandstone arches seem to defy gravitation) are much less known but definitely worth seeing.

Enjoy nature at its best!
