A microscope is one of the most popular laboratory instruments. The first optical microscopes were invented at the turn of the 16th century. They enabled objects invisible to the naked eye, such as living cells, to be observed. The invention of the electron microscope in the 1930s turned out to be a major breakthrough in experimental science. Such an instrument no longer relied on limiting properties of visible light and made it possible to discern individual atoms- the building blocks of matter.
In this workshop, the types of microscopes and their working principles will be presented. Participants will have an opportunity to prepare samples and make some observations using an optical microscope equipped with a digital camera. The event will also include a show of many interesting photos obtained with the use of optical and electron microscopes, their comparison, and a commentary regarding different techniques of observation. Last but not least, the workshop will provide a chance to engage in a discussion about the micro- and nanoworld investigation with researchers with hands-on experience.
