Phyto- what? Pharm-what? Yes, yes, sounds strange, but it is so simple: Phytochemistry studies chemicals derived from plants: their biosynthesis, structure and isolation; while Pharmacognosy researches plants as a possible source of drugs. There are many drugs of plant origin like: caffeine, cytizine, theophylline, scopolamine, papavarine, pilocarpine, atropine or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Right, the last one obtained from marijuana.
Inviting you to the Department of Pharmacognosy we want to show you how we work with plant extracts. These include sample preparation, chromatographic separation, essential oil hydrodistillation, and bioactivity testing. You will get to know how simple in some cases, and how laborious in the others it is to obtain final active molecule from the plant material. We will tell you how you can use medicinal plants at home to enjoy their beneficial effects on human health.
